The Clubs History...

Founded over a century and a half ago, Brecon RFC has been a cornerstone of community spirit and rugby passion, since 1874!

Early Days
Community Roots

From humble beginnings to a vibrant club, Brecon RFC thrives on local support and a love for rugby that runs deep in the teams.

The History of Brecon RFC: A Legacy in Red, White, and Black

Brecon RFC stands as a pillar of Welsh sporting heritage. Established in 1874, the club is one of the oldest and most storied rugby institutions in the world, predating the formal organisation of many national sides.

Our historical significance was cemented in 1881, when Brecon RFC took its place as a founding member of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). Since that landmark meeting at the Castle Hotel in Neath, we have remained at the forefront of the game’s development in Mid-Wales, consistently competing at the heart of the Welsh rugby pyramid.

The Heart of the Community

Throughout the 20th century, the club became the social and athletic heartbeat of the town. Operating from our iconic home at Parc de Brecon, we built a reputation for a physical, resilient brand of rugby that reflects the rugged landscape of the Brecon Beacons. Our identity is inextricably linked to the Red, White, and Black jersey—colours that represent generations of local pride.

On-Field Success and Silverware

The modern era has been defined by a clinical ascent through the WRU National Leagues. The club reached a pinnacle of knockout success by lifting the WRU Plate at the Principality Stadium, a day that saw the town of Brecon turn the national stadium into a sea of Red, White, and Black. This victory underscored our transition into a competitive powerhouse in the Welsh Championship.

A Breeding Ground for Talent

Brecon RFC has consistently punched above its weight, developing players who have gone on to achieve regional honours with Cardiff Rugby and international caps for Wales. While the professional game has changed, our core mission remains identical to that of our founders in 1874: to provide a platform for elite rugby in the heart of Powys.
